ನರಗುಂದ ಬೆಟ್ಟ — ಒಂದು ಪರಿಚಯ

ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಉತ್ತರ ಭಾಗದ ಗದಗ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿರುವ ನರಗುಂದ ಬೆಟ್ಟ, ದೂರದಿಂದ ನೋಡಿದರೆ ನಿದ್ದೆಗೊಂಡ ಸಿಂಹದಂತೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ. “ನರಗುಂದ” ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿನ ಅರ್ಥ “ನರಿಗಳ ಬೆಟ್ಟ” — ಹಿಂದೆ ಈ ಬಯಲು ಎಷ್ಟು ಕಾಡಾಗಿತ್ತು ಎಂಬುದರ ನೆನಪು.

ಇತಿಹಾಸ, ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮ — ಮೂರನ್ನೂ ಒಂದೇ ಕಡೆ ಅನುಭವಿಸಲು ಬಯಸುವವರಿಗೆ ನರಗುಂದ ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಸೂಕ್ತ ತಾಣ. ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಮೇಲೆ ಮರಾಠಾ ಕಾಲದ ಕೋಟೆ, ಸಿದ್ಧೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ, ವೆಂಕಟೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಅರಣ್ಯ ಇಲಾಖೆಯ ಸಾಲು ಮರದ ತಿಮ್ಮಕ್ಕ ಸಸ್ಯೋದ್ಯಾನ ಇದೆ.

ಗದಗ ನಿಂದ ಹೇಗೆ ತಲುಪುವುದು?

ಗದಗ ನಗರದಿಂದ ನರಗುಂದ ಸುಮಾರು 52 ಕಿ.ಮೀ. ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ರಸ್ತೆ ಸಂಪರ್ಕ ಉತ್ತಮವಾಗಿದೆ.

ಸಾಲು ಮರದ ತಿಮ್ಮಕ್ಕ ಸಸ್ಯೋದ್ಯಾನ: ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ತಪ್ಪಲಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಈ ಉದ್ಯಾನ ಹಸಿರಿನಿಂದ ತುಂಬಿದ್ದು, ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಕುಟುಂಬಕ್ಕೆ ಉಲ್ಲಾಸದ ಜಾಗ. ಟಿಕೇಟ್ ಕೌಂಟರ್ ಇಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಇದೆ.

ನರಗುಂದ ಕೋಟೆ: 1675ರಲ್ಲಿ ಮರಾಠಾ ಚಕ್ರವರ್ತಿ ಛತ್ರಪತಿ ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಮಹಾರಾಜರ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲಾದ ಈ ಕೋಟೆ ಈಗ ಅವಶೇಷಗಳ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರೂ, ಅದರ ಗೋಡೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಬುರುಜುಗಳು ಇತಿಹಾಸವನ್ನು ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತವೆ.

ಅಷ್ಟಭುಜ ಸರೋವರ: ಕೋಟೆಯ ಒಳಗಿರುವ ಬಂಡೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊರೆದ ಅಷ್ಟಭುಜಾಕಾರದ ಕೊಳ — ಮರಾಠಾ ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗ್ ಕೌಶಲ್ಯದ ಅದ್ಭುತ ನಿದರ್ಶನ.

ಸಿದ್ಧೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ: ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ತುದಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಈ ಶಿವ ದೇವಾಲಯ ಭಕ್ತರ ನೆಚ್ಚಿನ ತಾಣ.

ವೆಂಕಟೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ: ದ್ರಾವಿಡ ಶೈಲಿಯ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಇಳಿಜಾರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿದ್ದು, ಸುಂದರ ಗೋಪುರಕ್ಕೆ ಹೆಸರಾಗಿದೆ.

ಭಾಸ್ಕರ ರಾವ್ ಭಾವೆ — ನರಗುಂದದ ವೀರ

1857ರ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ ಸಂಗ್ರಾಮದ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ನಾಯಕ, ನರಗುಂದದ ಜಮೀನ್ದಾರ ಭಾಸ್ಕರ ರಾವ್ ಭಾವೆ (ಬಾಬಾ ಸಾಹೇಬ್) ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷ್ ಆಡಳಿತದ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ದಿಟ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಹೋರಾಡಿದರು. ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷ್ ಸೇನೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ದಾಳಿ ನಡೆಸಿ, ಕಮಾಂಡಿಂಗ್ ಆಫೀಸರ್ ಮ್ಯಾನ್ಸನ್​ನನ್ನು ಕೊಂದ ಈ ವೀರ, ದ್ರೋಹದಿಂದ ಸೆರೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕು 12 ಜೂನ್ 1858ರಂದು ಬೆಳಗಾವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಗಲ್ಲಿಗೇರಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟರು.

Nargund Hill — An Introduction

Nargund Hill rises from the flat Deccan plains of Gadag district, northern Karnataka, with the unmistakable profile of a sleeping lion. It is one of those rare places where history, nature, and devotion share the same hilltop — a Maratha-era fort, two ancient temples, an octagonal rock-cut lake, and the lush green campus of the Salu Marada Timmakka Nursery and Park, managed by the Karnataka Forest Department, Gadag Division.

The name Nargund (Naragunda in Kannada) translates as “hill of jackals” — a reminder of how wild these plains once were. Today the hill is alive with pilgrims, trekkers, school groups, and history enthusiasts, yet remains refreshingly crowd-free.

How to Reach from Gadag City

Nargund is approximately 52 km from Gadag city, an easy one-hour drive on well-maintained state roads.

Entry is managed by the Karnataka Forest Department (Gadag Division) at the Salu Marada Timmakka Park ticket counter.

What to See

Salu Marada Timmakka Park: The well-maintained Forest Department park at the base — shaded paths, greenery, and the ticket counter. A pleasant starting point for families.

Nargund Fort: Built in 1675 under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, this purely military stronghold has no palaces — only watchtowers, ammunition stores, thick walls, and a bastion that still commands the horizon.

Octagonal Rock-Cut Lake: Carved directly into the hillside rock, with stone steps spiralling to the waterline — a remarkable feat of Maratha-era engineering hidden inside the fort walls.

Siddeshwara Temple: The Shiva temple at the summit. Arrive at dawn for mist over the plains and the bell ringing across still air.

Venkateswara Temple: A Dravidian-style temple on the hillslope, notable for its ornate tiered gopura.

The Hero of 1857 — Bhaskar Rao Bhave

Nargund’s most celebrated chapter belongs to Bhaskar Rao Bhave — known as Baba Saheb — the Zamindar who led one of Karnataka’s fiercest uprisings against British rule in 1857–58. When the British denied his right to adopt an heir under the Doctrine of Lapse, Baba Saheb secretly armed his fort, attacked a British military column, killed its commanding officer Manson, and briefly captured the Company-held Koppaldurg fort.

Betrayed by men in his own camp, he was captured and executed in Belgaum on 12 June 1858. Climbing Nargund Hill, you climb the same hill his soldiers once defended.
