ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಚಮಚ ತುಪ್ಪದ ವಿಷಯಕ್ಕೆ ನಡೆದ ಸಣ್ಣ ವಿವಾದವನ್ನೇ ನೆಪ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು, ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಸಿಲ್ಲದೆ ರೈಲು ಹತ್ತಿದರು.
ಸರಿಯಾದ ಗುರುವನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಾ ಬಿಜಾಪುರ, ಪುಣೆ, ಗ್ವಾಲಿಯರ್ ಮೂಲಕ ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಜಲಂಧರ್ ಮತ್ತು ಕೋಲ್ಕತ್ತಾದವರೆಗೂ ಪ್ರಯಾಣ ಬೆಳೆಸಿದರು.

Born in the Heart of Gadag

Pandit Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi was born on February 4, 1922, in Gadag. His father, Gururaj Joshi, was a renowned educator and scholar, but young Bhimsen’s heart was captured by a different kind of learning.

It was in Gadag that his obsession with music began. As a child, he was famously captivated by the sound of the tanpura and the gramophone records of Abdul Karim Khan. His passion was so intense that he would often follow passing bhajan groups or wedding bands, eventually falling asleep on the streets of Gadag, only to be found by his worried family.

The Great Escape from Gadag

The story of Panditji is incomplete without the “Great Escape.” In 1933, at just 11 years old, he left his home in Gadag with nothing but a desire to find a Guru.

The Trigger: He famously left home after a small domestic disagreement over a spoonful of ghee, but the true reason was his thirst for music.
The Journey: He boarded a train without a ticket, traveling through Bijapur, Pune, and Gwalior, eventually reaching as far as Jalandhar and Kolkata in search of the perfect master.
