The identity of modern Gadag is inseparable from the Veereshwara Punyashrama. Established to empower the visually challenged, orphans, and the destitute, this institution became Gawai’s life’s work.

As the pontiff of the Ashram from 1944 until his passing in 2010, he turned Gadag into a sanctuary where music was not just an art form, but a tool for social rehabilitation. Under his guidance, the Ashram provided:

The Braille Pioneer: In a feat of incredible dedication, he re-wrote the Bhagavad Gita in Braille, ensuring spiritual knowledge was accessible to the visually impaired.
Theater Culture: He founded the Sri Guru Kumareshwara Krupaposhita Natya Company in Gadag to promote local theater and raise funds for the Ashram’s charitable activities.
